Lewis & Clark in Montana

CIMG2074 0The Lewis & Clark Expedition was the greatest land exploration ever sponsored by the United States government. Join us as we follow their path through parts of the beautiful state of Montana.

In addition to being the first Americans to cross the continent in search of a water route to the Pacific Ocean, Lewis & Clark kept extensive records of their travels. In their journals, the captains made many of the first scientific descriptions of American flora and fauna, as well as detailed accounts of Indian nations, their languages and customs. With the help of the journals, almost 200 years later, we know what they saw, experienced, thought, and accomplished.

In the spring of 1805, Captains Meriwether Lewis and William Clark and the Corps of Discovery first entered what is now the state of Montana, after a long and arduous winter with the Mandan and Hidatsa Indians in what is now North Dakota. They covered more miles in Montana than in any other state and had some of their most dramatic experiences here.

Join us on this exciting adventure as we follow the path of the great explorers through parts of the beautiful state of Montana, by car, foot and boat. Many places in the region explored by Lewis and Clark look, at first glance, much as they did 200 years ago. Others do not. Our historian guides will bring history to life for you. You will gain insight into the past as well as present issues of this remarkable region.

Discover the natural beauty along this historic journey. Listen to recounts of journal passages. Discuss the challenges and decisions of the expedition with group participants and your guides. Embark on river journeys and behold the sights that the explorers saw when they passed through the region. Hear about the mountain men, fur traders and Indians of the area. Learn the names of wildflowers, plants and mountains. Watch native wildlife, great and small.

Have fun while traveling on the path of Lewis, Clark, Sacagawea, Charbonneau, and the others. Stay in historic hotels in towns that saw the early days of Montana settlement. Visit the famous Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center. Float the Missouri and the Jefferson River. Visit the site of a remarkable ancient buffalo jump. Feel the spirit of discovery and become an explorer yourself.

This Special Interest Safari can be designed in various lengths and for groups of any size. Please call us and we will design your expedition!

Did You Know?

The Swahili word "safari" simply means "journey" and so we consider our tours to be journeys to a deeper understanding of wild animals and their habitats, geology and their ancient forces, history and its meaning for today. Journeys, too, to find peace and joy in the natural world. And last, but not least, journeys that lead to our own wild soul.
