Montana's Ghost Towns

SabinesBMontana's Ghost Towns tell us about the history of the area: the gold rush, the vigilantes, the people who braved life on the Western frontier. Join a Ghost Town tour and learn about the old days in the Wild West.

Montana's history was wild and full of daring adventure. Today's ghost towns are silent monuments to the stories and dreams of settlers, gold diggers, vigilantes and "ladies of the night". Where once there was raucous noise in crowded saloons, the scraping of gold pans coming from the creek, the sound of gallopping horses and gunshots in the streets -  there now is silence.

Year after year, sun, wind and snow ravaged the false store fronts. Rough-chinked cabins crumbled, boardwalks are broken. Nails rusted, wood rotted, roofs buckled. Much of the history of the ghost towns went into graves together with the inhabitants. Grave markers tell part of the tale. Walking down the dusty streets, the attentive visitor can still feel remnant energy echoeing from the wild days of the past. Peeking into windows, walking into buildings, the saloon, a one-room school, a boarding house, we can imagine a time long past and yet still hauntingly present.

These tours will delight novices and history buffs alike.

Did You Know?

The Swahili word "safari" simply means "journey" and so we consider our tours to be journeys to a deeper understanding of wild animals and their habitats, geology and their ancient forces, history and its meaning for today. Journeys, too, to find peace and joy in the natural world. And last, but not least, journeys that lead to our own wild soul.
